Ladakh Marathon 2013 - Run Ladakh , Sept. 8th, 2013

About the Ladakh Marathon

The Ladakh Marathon takes place during the Ladakh Festival, a weeklong celebration of sport, culture and tradition in a predominantly Buddhist high mountain desert region that was a central stop on the historic Silk Route between Central Asia and India.
The eco-friendly “green” marathon will encourage the young people of Ladakh to live a healthy lifestyle by taking up running and become more aware of the need to protect a stunningly beautiful but environmentally fragile region.
The event is organized by Leh-based Rimo Expeditions, India’s leading adventure travel company in cooperation with the support of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council and Jammu & Kashmir Tourism.

We are proud to announce 8 September 2013 as the date for the second annual Ladakh Marathon.
The announcement was made by Shri Rigzin Spalbar, Chairman of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council at an event to celebrate the success of the first inaugural Ladakh Marathon which took place on 9 September 2012.
Race day for the completed event saw almost 1,500 runners take part in events that included a full marathon around the capital of Leh at an altitude of 3524 metres (11,562 feet) and the ultra marathon, the extreme Khardung La Challenge, where runners crossed one of the world’s highest passes 5602 metres (18,380 feet).
“The 2013 Ladakh Marathon will be bigger and better,” said Chewang Motup. “We are already getting enquiries from runners around India who want to participate. Our goal is to become a key stop on the marathon calendar for runners, not just from Leh, but from around India and the world.”

Four challenging routes to choose from

10 KM RUN
It may be the shortest race but it doesn’t mean the 10 KM run will be easy. Still, this race is expected to have the widest participation among runners both young and older. We expect lots of schoolchildren to participate in this run and know it will involve the most enthusiasm.
 http://www.ladakhmarathon.com/races/10-km-run/
21 KM HALF MARATHON
The half marathon takes you through the town of Leh and its outskirts and includes a loop that starts at the Petrol Pump and back. If you are not ready for the full marathon why not give this run a shot and then come back next year for the big race. Most people run the half marathon to prepare for the full marathon.
 http://www.ladakhmarathon.com/races/21-km-half-marathon/
42 KM MARATHON
The Ladakh Full Marathon is the world’s highest marathon. It begins and ends in the town of Leh but the route takes you through the outskirts and along the Leh Valley where the road crosses the Indus River several times. If you are a serious long distance runner this is one course you will want under your belt and be talking about for a long time to come.
 http://www.ladakhmarathon.com/races/42-km-marathon/
KHARDUNG LA CHALLENGE
This is a race for the elite runner who wants to push the limits of endurance. It starts in the scenic Nubra Valley and then goes uphill all the way to the Khardung La along the world’s highest motorable road past summer yak pastures and stunning views of the East Karakoram mountains of Ladakh. The good thing is that once you reach the pass, it’s all downhill from there to Leh.

Photo-Exhibition "Some Cups of Butter-Tea - Daily Life in Zanskar", 4.-26th August 2012, Lonpo House (near Leh Palace), Leh, Ladakh, J&K India

The Project "Kamerakidz", which started in August 2011 in Zanskar, is showing its first Photo-Exhibition "Some Cups of Buttertea – Daily life in Zanskar" from 5th to 26th Aug, 2012 in collaboration with the Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation at Lonpo-House, Leh.

Taken by the children of the SECPADS-School between Karsha and Hongshed in Zanskar, will be showing a variety of motifs as portraits, landscapes, animals, people doing their daily work, gompas, monks and nuns, buddhist objects – everything what the children found worth capturing.

Aged between 12 and 15 years, the children were given small digital cameras and introductions in two periods of 2,5 weeks in August 2011 and May/June 2012.

In this exhibition the audience can get a good impression of the daily life in Zanskar. The photos will show a reality which looks very familiar to the inhabitants of the region, but still like an unknown world to outsiders. The insight, they get from Zanskar, through these photos is a very realistic one. Nothing was set-up for the photos.

The Kamerakidz try to sell a lot of products with their photos like prints, calenders and postcards to become independent from donations, but they are not so far yet, so they are very thankful to their sponsors for this exhibition, especially Reach Ladakh, Overland Escape and Athenstaedt-Foundation and their host Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation.

Trak Thok Tsechu (Ladakh) 28-29th July 2012 & Sani Naro Nasryal (Zanskar) 1-2nd August 2012

Please check the dates locally, since the dates of festivals in remote areas of Zanskar and Changtang might be changed due to auspicious/inauspicious dates, absence of Head Lama and similar reasons WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE.

Knowledge in Ladakh, e.g. Leh, especially in the Tourist Offices is poor, so try to find a local of the places who definetely knows the festival, goes there himself or at least has friends and/or family in the villages who can confirm the festival dates.

Make sure to check, double & triple check BEFORE YOU GO. Otherwise you might spend a lot of time & money in a remote area ONLY to find out that there is NO FESTIVAL taking place.

Still you can then enjoy the drive, landscape and scenery around you which are spectacular in themselves in the Zanskar & Changtang regions.

Don't forget to take the neccessary permits (and enough photocopies) for Changtang, since Shashukul at least lies in the restricted areas near Panggong Lake and the chinese border.

For Zanskar you only need to bring your passport to show at the different check-points coming close to the border regions with Pakistan.

My contribution

I like the site and have been following Bellamy's post for some time now.

Since Bellamy was looking for contributing authors to his weblog and I do photography mostly when I travel we decided this is something that we could work on.

Perhaps some pieces about travelling and photography, or organizing my workflow
whilst on the road.

Basically something that we all, myself included, would like to read on Bellamy's site.

This suits me as well, blogging on this site "Mask Dances of Ladakh & Zanskar" just
about these topics, e.g. the regions of Ladakh, Zanskar, Nubra and Changtang as well
as about Street-Photography on one of my other my weblogs "Serendipity at work" at http://serendipity-at-work.blogspot.de/.

So, hopefully not to far into the future we might join forces and you will be able to
welcome me as a contributing author on "Japan Camera Hunter" for the benefit of
all of us photographers, writers, bloggers, in short "hunters and gatherers". ;-)

So far the short announcement for this time.

Enjoy your life
